The San Joaquin Valley comprises the southern two-thirds of the Central Valley of California. Situated between the towering Sierra Nevada on the east, the Diablo and Temblor Ranges to the west, and the Tehachapi Mountains to the south, the valley occupies a trough created by tectonic forces related to the collision of the Pa- cific and North American Plates. Today the San Joaquin Valley is the backbone of California’s modern and highly technological agricultural industry.
