Session Descriptions

Impacting Patient Outcomes and Organizational Performance - Kelly Tanner, PhD, RDH

Focus is placed mostly upon developing leaders to grow and sustain healthy organizations. Developing followership is equally essential to building trust and confidence within the dental practice and organization. Understanding group dynamics and intentionally developing followership among individuals and groups are vital to the health of organizations. This course will enlighten attendees on the differences between followership and leadership, how leaders build followers, and how to build a sustainable plan within the dental practice and organization to promote succession planning and growth. This course will also discuss principles of emotional intelligence that are essential to communication, building trust, conflict management, and influential negotiation within the dental practice and organizations.
Objectives:

  • Understand how group dynamics with dental teams and organizations affect decision making.
  • Understand how leadership and followership dynamics influence dental practices and organizations.
  • Learn how the principles of emotional intelligence drive communication, decision making, conflict management, negotiation, and case presentation with patients and co-workers.

Finding Your Magnetic North - Kelly Tanner, PhD, RDH

To reach high performance, you must consider more than your passions and efforts. Why are some people miserable and others happy during their journey? High-performance teams begin with everyone understanding their internal standards such as their identity, beliefs, values, and expectations for excellence and becoming crystal clear on what that means individually and how that shows up in your daily excellence. This course introduces concepts of gaining personal clarity and aligning your internal standards to how you are showing up every day in your team.

Objectives:

  • Set clear intentions for who you want to be each day and how you want to interact with your team and patients.
  • Discover the skills that sustain your impact to make a difference and serve with excellence.
  • Define what is meaningful to you by aligning your purpose with your efforts.

Avoiding Common Wage Violations - Von Boyenger, Senior Deputy Labor Commissioner, California Department of Industrial Relations

Just because you work in a small dental practice does not mean your boss is exempt from California labor laws. Labor laws can be intimidating, but you will come to understand they are common sense laws made to protect employees.  This course will help you understand the labor laws that hygienists often complain about, and help you approach your boss with information to back up your labor law concerns.

Objectives - to increase understanding of the following:

  • What the Dept. of Industrial Relations and the California Labor Commissioner does for you
  • Compensation for hours worked and Overtime pay
  • Exempt/ Non-exempt/ Salary pay and Independent Contractor determination
  • Reporting time pay- Clocking in & out when there are No Shows
  • Allowed time off work and State mandated sick pay
  • Meals and rest periods
  • Mandatory meetings or lunch meeting pay
  • Reduced rate of pay during a No-Show appointment
