Current statistics indicate that over 16 million Americans are severely deficient in Vitamin C, over 66 million Americans are deficient in Vitamin D and nearly 7% of American children have iron deficiency anemia.  Between pediatric nutrition from our Flintstone Vitamins to the evolution of the food pyramid and every unique fad diet in between, societal trends have dramatically impacted the knowledge, decision-making and subsequent deficiencies, and diseases of the dental patient.

As nutritional needs advance with age, systemic disease, and dietary considerations, so does the risk for oral disease, pathological findings, inflammatory conditions, changes in occlusion, constriction of the airway & challenges in breathing.  Now more than ever, it is imperative for the preventive specialist in the dental practice to understand the integral role that diet and nutrition play in the overall health and wellness of our patients.

Join Katrina Sanders as she discusses the evolution of nutritional considerations, the integration of supplements for common ailments and common oral manifestations that may be key indicators to deficiencies as well as a functional approach to improving the health and wellness of the teeth, airway, oral tissues and tissues of the head and neck.  Afterall, for those who grew up as Flintstone Kids, we’re over ten million strong and still growing.

Objectives:

  • Discuss the evolution of nutritional considerations from prehistoric times to current fad diets
  • Identify head and neck conditions indicative of potential nutritional challenges and deficiencies
  • Examine the vitamins, minerals and supplements that are appropriate for common ailments of the dental patient
  • Discover the principles of good dental nutrition as they relate to oral and systemic health
